From a size to a framing plan in a minute

Give it a size and a board. The designer frames the deck at spans a structural engineer has checked, counts every board, joist, clip and bag of concrete, plans each cut and tells you what to fix.

The starting deck, 4.8 × 3.6 m, as the designer works it out:

How to build a deck frame
Checks on this deckFree
  • Extra rot protection near the ground18 frame pieces sit 400 mm or less above the ground. Wood this close to the ground gets extra rot protection (H4 treatment) instead of H3.
  • Last row of boards ripped to 75 mmThe last row of boards has to be ripped (cut down lengthwise) to 75 mm wide — a full board is 138 mm. To finish on a full board, make the deck depth (out from the house) 78 mm smaller (3522 mm) or 63 mm larger (3663 mm).
  • Council approval — VICIn Victoria every deck attached to the house needs a building permit from a building surveyor, whatever its size. A planning permit from the council is usually not needed when the floor is 800 mm or less above the ground, unless a heritage or other overlay applies.
  • Free, with no account: the drawing, the 3D view, the checks and a price band for your state.
  • In your free deck pack: the concept framing plan, the materials list and the cut list. It unlocks with your contact details and a texted code.

See your deck on your own house

Design your deck free, then add a photo of the back of your house. Our AI puts your deck on it, in your board and colour. Drag across a picture to compare.

Examples made by our AI from AI-generated photos of houses, not customers’ homes. Your pictures use your own photo. Each example is the best of several attempts. The AI doesn’t measure, so a deck often comes out smaller or larger than it was designed, and the AI can get the spot or the way the boards run wrong.

How we pick these boards

Composite Decks picks these ranges: they are the boards we know well, and the deck designer is built around them. No brand or seller pays for the place. Each price is the average of the sellers we track in your state (the national average, marked AU, where none there prices the board yet), per square metre including GST and dated; the card’s last line says how many sellers it covers.
